It’s a pleasure to show 99% of the movies we bring to town (with very few duds, thank
heavens) but every now and then, it’s an absolute HONOR to show a special one, and THE
VOICE OF HIND RAJAB is definitely one of those. It may even be the best movie we’ve shown
so far this year. It’s the heartrending story of five-year-old Hind Rajab, a little Palestinian girl
who—on January 29, 2024–was a passenger in a car caught in a barrage of Israeli shells
bombarding Gaza. Terrified, little Hind desperately used her phone to call for help from the
Palestine Red Crescent Society (the equivalent of our Red Cross), pleading that they come and rescue her. For the next 70 minutes, the volunteers raced against the clock trying to pinpoint
the little girl’s location, calm her fears and get a rescue team to her. That’s the plot, nothing more; but in that brief period you will experience more emotional involvement than any ten other movies
of the year combined. Deftly blending documentary footage (that actually is the real recording of
Hind we hear) and non-documentary (though the non-documentary footage is accurately
transcribed from the actual rescue procedures), THE VOICE OF HIND RAJAB is a mesmerizing depiction of the human side of war, devoid of political or religious sermonizing. Since its premiere
at the latest Venice International Film Festival, where it won the Special Jury Prize and an
astounding 23-minute standing ovation (the longest in the festival’s history!), THE VOICE OF HIND RAJAB has gone on to win dozens of awards around the world (including an Oscar nomination this year for Best Foreign Language Film) and unanimous acclaim from the public and critics alike.
Empire Magazine called it “about as powerful as cinema gets—its hybrid blend of documentary
audio and devastating dramatization is heartwrencingly, shatteringly effective” while the Third
Coast Review hailed it as “one of the most unforgettable and harrowing experiences you’ll have
