Actions Speak Louder Than Words

The following timeline presents our first year of accomplishments.

April 20, 2002 — A small team of Nevada County peace activists organized carpools and procured four buses to bring concerned citizens to the International ANSWER coalition sponsored peace march and rally in San Francisco. At a de-briefing meeting shortly thereafter, Peace Center of Nevada County was born.
May, 2002 (ongoing) — Started to hold peace vigils twice weekly in Nevada City and Grass Valley, to make the discussion more visible and accessible to the broader community.
June, 2002 — Peace Center of Nevada County participants began meeting every three weeks to exchange ideas, plan activities and foster community. Contact Line began being regularly updated with current schedule and online Bulletins and Alerts initiated to a list of participants.
July 4, 2002 — Many participated in our musical peace float contingent for the Independence Day parade in Nevada City.
August, 2002 — Collected over 1300 signatures and funds to place full-page "NO MORE WAR" ad in The Union newspaper.
September 5, 2002 — "Palestine, Iraq, and US Policy in the Middle East" An Evening with Richard Becker in Grass Valley.
September 17, 2002 — www.ncpeace.org goes live, giving Peace Center of Nevada County an Internet presence.
September 8, 2002 — Performed "The Bill of Rights vs. The Patriot Act" mobile theater piece in Nevada City's Constitution Day parade, with a cast of more than 40 participants.
October 3 - 4, 2002 — Held dusk-to-dawn "Awakening" vigil for peace at the Miners' Foundry Cultural Center, attended by over 1500 performers and audience members over a 12-hour period, including breakfast for 300. Broadcast live on local radio station, KVMR.
October 20, 2002 — Hosted the first West Coast screening of Michael Moore's Oscar-winning documentary "Bowling for Columbine" at the Nevada Theater, raising $7000 for the Peace Center and the Laura Wilcox Memorial Fund.
October 26, 2002 — Organized buses and carpools to San Francisco to take part in International ANSWER coalition sponsored "March on Washington D.C. and San Francisco" march and rally.
October 27, 2002 — Presented "The War on Truth, Freedom, Democracy, and Dissent," an evening with Carol Brouillet, co-founder of the International Media Project and the Who's Counting? Project.
November and December, 2002 — Sponsored ongoing "Alternatives to War Toys" educational tabling at Grass Valley K-Mart.
November 17, 2002 — Presented "Council of Elders" at the Center for the Arts, a panel discussion among six of our most experienced senior activists, broadcast live on KVMR.
November 29, 2002 — Held educational "Buy Nothing Day" event in Grass Valley.
December 12, 2002 — Sponsored a non-violence training in Nevada City presented by PCNC participants skilled in concepts and practice of non-violent direct action.
December 13, 2002 — Sponsored "Songs for a Revolution," dinner and show to raise funds to send two volunteers to Chiapas, Mexico to build solidarity with south-of-the-border peace and justice organizations.
December 15, 2002 — Helped the Nevada County Bill of Rights Defense Committee plan and hold a "Funeral for the Bill of Rights" - an eulogy in Calahan Park, a funeral walk up to the Nevada City Graveyard and a tearful sendoff, hopeful of resurrection.
January, 2003 — Took part in development of Sacramento Valley/Foothills Regional Peace Centers coalition for planning and holding regional events.
January 18, 2003 — Organized carpools and 11 buses to send over 800 people from Nevada County to a peace march and rally in San Francisco.
February 1 - 2, 2003 — Brought Sarah Seeds of Food Not Bombs to Grass Valley to hold trainings in affinity group formation and function, and political street theater.
February 10, 2003 — A large group of PCNC participants supported a "City of Peace" Resolution presented to the City Council of Nevada City. "A Resolution Appealing to President George W. Bush for the Highest Level of Restraint Possible Regarding a Potential Attack Against Iraq."
February 15, 2003 — Planned and hosted "Convergence on the Capitol" with Sacramento Valley/Foothills Regional Peace Centers. Organized buses and carpools to help Nevada County activists attend.
March 12, 2003 — The Peace Center sponsors and benefits from "Give Peace A Dance," a Soul 2 Sole and World Music DJ dance event at Center for the Arts. To be held from time to time.
March 2, 2003 — Produced an evening of political musical satire with Dave Lippman and The Prince Myshkins at Center for the Arts.
March 12, 2003 — Organized instant and successful protest against K-Mart for carrying Easter baskets containing war toys.
March 15, 2003 — Organized "Peace Buses" to San Francisco for the International A.N.S.W.E.R. march and rally in solidarity with the convergence on the White House in Washington, D.C. to "Stop War."
March 20, 2003 — Orchestrated an "If and When" rally and march through Nevada City in response to Bush's invasion of Iraq. Took part in a Regional Response in Sacramento the following weekend.
March 27, 2003 — Supported beloved peace activist and musician Holly Near concert at Grass Valley Veterans' Hall.
April 5, 2003 — Held Big Business Day 2003 "Stop the Corporate War on Democracy" educational event.
April 5, 2003 — Helped produce "Teaching Children Peace" event at Center for the Arts.
April 12, 2003 — Organized "Peace Train" to San Francisco to rally and march in solidarity with the National "Circle the Whitehouse" event.
April 13, 2003 — Took part in "Conscience in the Capitols" event put on by the Friends Committee on National Legislation.
April 27, 2003A — Celebrated a year of successful organizing, educating, activating, communicating, and fun(d)raising by tabling at the Earth Day gathering in Pioneer Park during the day, and holding our First Birthday party that evening at Center for the Arts.
