Elizabeth Ormond’s Obituary:

Elizabeth Kelso Ormond passed away in her home on, or about, Wednesday, September 17, 2008.

Elizabeth was born in East Orange, New Jersey on February 22, 1946, and received her higher education in the Bay Area. She completed her undergraduate work at Stanford University and earned a law degree from Hastings College of the Law in 1980. She passed the bar but decided not to become a lawyer, opting instead for a career doing legal research, first for Matthew-Bender and then Bancroft-Whitney.

Never married, Elizabeth spent a number of years teaching English in Japan prior to entering Hastings. She retired to the Grass Valley area in 2001.

Here she was active in a number of organizations. She served on the Board of Directors at the Peace Center of Nevada County for several years and helped staff that office from its opening in 2003. She also participated in the Altar Show for a couple of years and was serving on that Board at the time of her death. She also volunteered at the Grass Valley Public Library and was active in Grandmothers for Peace and Women in Black.

Ms Ormond is survived by her brother, Kenneth Ormond; her stepmother, Rosetta; her nephews, Matt, Josh, and Clinton; and a step-niece, Tina Waschae.

APPLE/UUCM FRIDAY FILM SERIES FOR NOVEMBER

WHAT: "Relocalization: Making Friends With an Unthinkable Future," a video presentation by Michael Brownlee, co-founder of Boulder Valley Relocalization and catalyst for Boulder Going Local, Inc.
WHO: APPLE (Alliance for a Post Petroleum Local Economy) and UUCM (Unitarian Universalist Community of the Mountains)
WHEN: Friday, November 7, 7:30 p.m.
WHERE: UUCM Chapel, 246 S. Church Street, Grass Valley
COST: Suggested donation of $3-$5
More Information: www.apple-nc.org or call (530) 274-3435
In 2007, Michael Brownlee and the Boulder Valley Relocalization group presented their first Peak Oil conference, "A Renaissance of Local," where cutting edge speakers on Peak Oil gathered to talk about our energy-constrained and environmentally-challenged future. Our film this evening is Brownlee's presentation, which focuses on the importance of strengthening our local economies so that we can meet the challenge of the 21st-century "perfect storm" currently bearing down upon the world. He discussed the three major areas of concern we now face: peak oil, climate change, and economic meltdown. The collapse of U.S. credit markets over the past month and its effect on global banks and markets makes Brownlee's overview very timely.

Brownlee clearly outlines the five critical areas that the Boulder Valley group focuses on in their relocalization efforts: Buy Local First; Eat Local; Grow Local; Local Energy; and Local Currency. Can we do the same here? APPLE thinks so. Our community has made great strides during the past two years when it comes to eating and growing locally, but there's much work to be done.

APPLE of Nevada County and UUCM host the APPLE/UUCM Film Series on the first Friday of each month. Donations are kindly accepted — $3 to $5 is suggested.

For information about our December 5th Holiday Potluck Networking Night for the Sustainability community and all friends of APPLE and UUCM, check www.apple-nc.org, www.uugrassvalley.org, or call 274-3435 for further details.

Walk for Peace November 9th

This is not a political event, a protest, or a march. Barbara West from Davis is reaching out to folks across the political/cultural spectrum and hoping to get a range of people like we did last time (April, 2005).
The event starts at 9:00 a.m., Sunday, November 9th, in E Davis , along E. 8th St., by the Dollar Store parking lot (just west of Pole Line Rd.)
We begin walking at 9:20. Some of us will walk across the causeway to W. Sac (10 miles) and take Yolobus home. Others walk part-way.
I'm aware the timing of this walk conflicts with church for many folks. Having the last walk on a Saturday, though, excluded many in the Jewish community. My thought is to keep alternating Saturday/Sunday for future walks.
I'm happy to discuss it further or answer questions.
Looking forward to being in touch, whether on Sunday the 9th or another time.
Thanks,
Barbara West
