Women in Black (WIB)

We stand in silence, because words alone cannot express the tragedy that wars and hatred bring. We stand in black, mourning for lives broken or lost through violence in the U.S., Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine/Israel, the Sudan and in ALL wars. We stand in witness to the suffering of victims of violence all over the world. We stand in solidarity with people all over the world who struggle for justice and peace. We stand convinced that the world's citizens can learn the difference between justice and vengeance, and can call world leaders into accountability to employ nonviolent means to resolve conflicts.

An International Women's Peace Network, WIB was started by Israeli women in Israel in 1988, standing in silent protest against the occupation of Gaza and the West Bank and has since spread world-wide. WIB began standing in the US on 9-11-01. Nevada County Women in Black have been standing weekly on the Broad Street bridge since February 2003. During the winter months we stand from 4:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. on Thursdays, in the summer months from 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. Please join us, wearing black and prepared to be silent. Men resonating with the aim of WIB are welcome to join us, wearing black, standing on the opposite side of the bridge.

Please contact Elizabeth at ormadillo@earthlink.net for more information, as the times do vary with the changing of the light. The website for Women in Black is here.

Military Recruiters in the Schools

We are parents, relatives and community members who are concerned about the presence of the military in our middle and high school campuses.

Our purpose is to counter the military presence, including recruiters, JROTC, and speakers, in our high schools. Recruiters make many false promises!. Our children deserve to know what they are signing up for and what alternatives for college funding and careers exist BEFORE they enlist.

We plan to accomplish this by having concerned adults and students learn the facts and information, so we can present the alternatives to our young adults. To keep your records out of the hands of recruiters and protect personal information from the Pentagons illegal data base, click on the following links: opt out form for schools, and opt out info form for the data base.

Grandmothers for Peace

This is a local chapter of Grandmothers For Peace International, which began in 1982. Each chapter decides what their aims and activities will be; emphasis may be placed on protests — e.g., nuclear testing, the School of the Americas, etc. — or making up kits of supplies for the children in Iraq.

The mission statement for GFP is "To create a world of peace for this, and future, generations." You don't have to be a biological grandmother to join, just be concerned about leaving a better world for "the grandchildren."

Our local group began in March 2004. Our focus is on positive actions that will bring awareness to the community and inspire action. The members who attend the meetings will decide and plan future actions.

Our meetings are held at the PCNC office on the first Tuesday of each month, from 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

To receive notification of meetings and activities, send an e-mail to grannies4peace@hotmail.com with your e-mail address. If you have questions, call Shirley McDonald at 265.5545.

Conscientious Objectors Group

Our mission is to serve as a resource for individuals who are examining their choices about participation in the military, war, and Selective Service registration. We provide information and support to those who find that such participation would be against their consciences and to people dealing with various concerns about the draft.

Current Objectives include:

1. Develop education for and outreach to the community about conscientious objection issues, selective service and the draft. Examples would be curricula specific to parents of young children and curricula specific to teens and young adults.

2. Become prepared to provide counseling regarding options should a draft be reinstated.

3. Serve as a local resource for

  1. a) documenting conscientious objection intent;
  2. b) a secular network for individuals with conscientious objection interests;
  3. c) local religious organizations that support conscientious objectors.
