Film--At the River I Stand (MLK)
Memphis, Spring 1968, marked the dramatic climax of the Civil Rights movement.
At the River I Stand skillfully reconstructs the two eventful months that
transformed a local labor dispute into a national conflagration, and disentangles
the complex historical forces that came together with the inevitability
of tragedy at the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This 58-minute documentary
brings into sharp relief issues that have only become more urgent in the
intervening years: the connection between economic and civil rights, the
debate over violent vs. nonviolent change and the demand for full inclusion
of African Americans in American life. 1994 by Erik Barnouw who received
the Award for Best Documentary, Organization of American Historians. Donation
requested, no one turned away. Location: Sierra Center for Spiritual Living,
119 Florence Ave, Grass Valley

Spiritual Cinema-- Ocean of Pearls
This
brilliant first feature from Sarab Neelam, M.D. depicts the universal quest
for identity. As a Sikh in North America, Dr. Amrit Singh is of two worlds,
but belongs to neither. “To my father, the turban is an article of faith,” says
Amrit. “To me, it means I better make damned sure I'm not late for my flight.” When
he is offered a prestigious position at a Detroit hospital, the young surgeon
sees an opportunity to start fresh, only to discover that his appearance
may threaten his success. What happens when our dreams seem to clash with
our heritage? Perhaps it is through the collusion of the old ways and the
new that we find out who we are. 97 min. in English. Written and directed
by Sarab Neelam. Location: Sierra Center for Spiritual Living, 119 Florence
Ave, Grass Valley

“Living Peace” Workshop with Shirley
McDonald
It can seem like an overwhelming job when we think about what
we can do to create a world of peace, but as we will discuss in this workshop,
there are many small steps we can take in our lives that will ripple out
in ever-widening circles, to create an impact. As Gandhi said, “We must
BE the peace we want to see in the world.” During this workshop, we will
look at the ways we can “live” peace, beginning with ourselves as individuals,
and spreading it out to within our homes, our communities, and to the world
looking at the quadrants of the physical, mental, spiritual, and social-emotional
planes. Location: Community Room, Madelyn Helling Public Library.

1940 using “resistance disguised as collaboration” which helped the underground
resistance save most of Denmark’s 7000 Jews, 2) Striking workers in Poland
in 1980 for independent unions, leading to Solidarity’s becoming the governing
political party in 1989, and 3) Chilean workers’ nonviolent protests in
1983 leading to the downfall of the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet.
